MM02. Worried about the impact of stock market fluctuations on you and your family? These are important times for understanding and taking action to assure your long-term financial independence. This course is designed to provide a working knowledge of the concepts and principles involved in making your money work for you. We will cover interest rates, insurance investments, domestic and global stock and bond markets and financial planning for estates and college costs. This seminar is guaranteed to provide reliable and substantial information. There is a $5 materials fee included in the price. Students should bring a pencil, pad and a calculator to class. The seminar is appropriate for both beginners and for those with investment experience.

MM04. This course is designed for people who want to research stocks and/or bonds on the Internet and want to know where to look for information. A few sites from each of the following categories will be covered: bond prices, company web sites, economics-related information, financial portals, financial publications, investor presentations, requests for written information, SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) information, stock market chat rooms, stock screening programs, valuation programs. A $2 materials fee is payable to the instructor. This will handle the cost of a floppy disk for urls for all the categories listed above.

MM06. This course will cover the concepts, thought processes, and methodologies needed to analyze the value of a business. The focus will be on publicly owned corporations, the rationality of stock prices and the intrinsic value of a company. The basic premise is that an investor can determine a range of prices that represent fair value for a stock using a systematic approach. This course is not a stock market game, but there will be written homework assignments to recommend individual equity purchases. There is no required text, but Learn to Earn by Lynch and Rothchild ($14) is suggested reading. Most background information and materials are available on the Internet (relevant links to be provided). Students will be expected to have a reasonable facility with spreadsheets and the Internet, and have an e-mail address. Access to a computer and the ability to read Microsoft Excel and Word files is a must. Topics to be discussed are as follows: What is a stock? What is the stock market? Why do we have and/or need stock markets? How to value a stock or bond. What is a reasonable return on an investment? Details of balance sheets, income and cash flow statements.
