Getting Directions
We are providing you with an opportunity to get complete directions and a map from your home to your class. We are doing this with the 17 most popular classroom sites in the Fall term. Following the class description and dates is the location of the class. Sites that are followed by the maps.expedia.com logo are the ones for which you can receive directions. Clicking on the location -- highlighted in blue -- will open up a window in maps.expedia.com. It might take a few moments to launch. You will be asked for a starting point. Fill that in. Scroll down to the destination point. The address of the end point will already be filled in. Continue to scroll down and click on “Get Driving Directions,” and you will be provided with detailed instructions and a map, which can be printed. However, we are experiencing a glitch with the program. You can still get directions by clicking on the location, except you will have to fill in the state and zip code of the end point. Of Arts and Crafts locations, the Chestnut Hill sites are in 19118; Germantown Women’s Y and Germantown Friends School are in 19144; all others are in 19119. You can also click on the Locations link at the bottom of the page and that will take you to the current locations page. Classes with an * are at the instructor’s home and directions will be given after registering for the class.

Papercutting: Reviving a Folk Art

AC12. Papercutting is an ancient art dating back to the creation of paper during the 1st century in China. Since that time, artisans have used paper, scissors, and knives to create objects both ornamental and functional. Perhaps you made a snowflake in grade school, or have seen silhouettes. These are forms of papercutting. In this course, you will learn about design, symmetry, and negative and positive space. You will then create a papercut using themes from your imagination and passions. Your finished product will be suitable for framing. Bring a #11 x-acto knife and a cutting mat. There is an additional materials fee of $5, payable to the instructor.

Mindy Shapiro has been a craft artist for over 20 years. Her papercuts have been exhibited in numerous galleries and at craft shows. She last taught challah baking for MALT.

Make Your Own Underground Railroad Quilt Sampler

AC14. Come learn the fascinating story of how quilting and the Underground Railroad are connected...“There are five squares of knots on the quilt every two inches apart. They escaped on the Fifth knot on the Tenth pattern and went to Ontario Canada... The Monkey Wrench turns the wagon Wheel toward Canada on a Bear’s Paw trail to the Crossroads. Once they got to the crossroads, they dug a Log Cabin on the ground. Shoofly told them to dress up in cotton and satin Bow Ties and go to the cathedral church, get married and exchange Double Wedding Rings. Flying Geese stay on the Drunkard’s Path and follow the Stars....” a story passed through generations, describing the link between signs and symbols in quilts with secret directions for runaway slaves on their journey north. Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad by Jacqueline Tobin and Raymond Dobard expands the story and examines the link. This class, for novice and experienced quilters alike, will be hands-on, enabling you to acquire a basic knowledge of quilts and their construction, in addition to understanding the significance of the squares as it relates to the Underground Railroad. The result is a piece of history and a family heirloom. Each quilter brings her own materials and can work at home between meetings. A sewing machine is NOT required.

Sarah Bond has taught this class to parents, teachers, and friends at Greene Street Friends School. She has been a quilter for over 20 years, fascinated with quilts and their place in culture and family history. She has also taught informally in the community for years, from sign language to aerobics to quilting.
