Ken Ulansey,
The Producer & Studio Performer


The role of producer is a multi-faceted and intriguing one. From helping to choose material, tempos, recording situations, accompanists...to careful listening in the engineer’s booth to find the best efforts of the musicians, the producer brings musical and interpersonal skills together. Ken has begun getting comfortable in this world, having produced or co-produced Jazz, Classical, Folk, Latin and Klezmer CDs, as well as co-producing music for several award-winning short films. Ken and Heath Allen produced and are the featured performers on the CD. Allen wrote the music and lyrics of the songs, plays the piano, and is a vocalist on some of the cuts. Ken plays the alto sax. Susan Werner is the singer on some songs.

Ken co-produced as well as appeared as a performer on Relâche’s Pick It Up CD. The song, Octeto Malandro, according to the liner notes, “...consists of a series of variations derived from song forms comprising the Son and Danzon. These forms, originally from Cuba, inform much of the dance music from states throughout Mexico...” Relâche “is a performing ensemble and producing organization dedicated to the development and performance of music from the late 20th century. Recognized for its interpretative and technical skills, the Ensemble performs works by composers from throughout the world, integrating state-of-the-art electronic and computer technologies with a variety of late 20th century compositional techniques...Since 1993, the Relâche Ensemble has participated in Music In Motion, a project designed to develop audiences through collaborations among composers, performing ensembles and host sites in five U.S. cities to create new works in the context of a variety of public outreach activities.”

Free Improvisation

favorite Favorite Places includes musical pieces that were composed on the spot by the performers. It was co-produced by Ken, Dave Darling, Paul Butler and Glen Barrett.





Klezmer
