Any similarities between the character, Jim Green in The Rock and the Kangaroos, and Dr. Jim O. Rogers, the author, are purely coincidental, says the writer. Both grew up poor in a small town in Oklahoma; both matriculated and played basketball at a small college in Texas, in Rogers case, it was Austin College in Sherman. Each graduated in 1963 with a major in Business Administration; each dabble(s) in art and music. Jim Green becomes a highly successful high school basketball coach at his alma mater. Rogers briefly coached basketball before becoming an educational administrator in the small town of Nocona, TX so thats where the similarities begin to end.
The Rock and the Kangaroos was his first attempt at a novel after years of writing education articles. In addition to The Rock and the Kangaroos, he has written and illustrated a childrens book, Eyes for Ted Bear, and numerous songs and poems. As a visual artist, he has worked for a number of years in enamels, using a unique technique of pouring paint on the canvas. His most significant work is Yellow Feather, which is on display in two galleries, with the original shown in the Texas Trails Art Gallery in Nocona.
Dr. Rogers also earned a degree in Economics from Austin, then received his Master of Science degree from Oklahoma State University in 1968, and his Doctorate from the University of North Texas in 1977. Dr. Rogers served as an Executive Committee Member of the Austin College National Alumni Board and was inducted into the Austin College Athletic Hall of Honor in 1990.
During the past 32 years, Dr. Rogers has published the following articles and books:
